CEV Cup final

Cuneo beat the Russians of Iskra.

Thanks to a brilliant victory, the Cev Cup is back in Cuneo. This is the third of the club. The team of chairman Valter Lannutti beat the Russians of Iskra in Belgium 3-1. It was a tight affair all the way but Giuliani’s boys played with great determination and only conceded the second set.

“It’s been a fantastic game – said chairman Lannutti – A very difficult one but played at a high level, like the whole competition. We needed this victory for the club, the players, the fans and the city. On Thursday we’ll be back on court to win again”.

One of the most applauded players of this Final Four has to be Captain Wijsmans, who played at home in Belgium: “We had to fight to win it, it was tough but we managed to clinch it. This team has worked very hard to get there, we really deserved this trophy, let’s enjoy it! The Russians fought hard, they block and serve well but we did well to stay composed. Winning the Cev Cup in Belgium is something unbelievable for me”.

Middleblocker Luigi Mastrangelo was thrilled too: “The Cev Cup was one of our targets this season and we fought fori t. It was not easy to block the Russians, who really played a good game. Our next target ? Get to Bologna!”.

Serie A1 TIM – Playoffs quarter-finals

Another tie-break win for Trento, while Treviso strikes first.

MARMI LANZA VERONA – ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO 2-3 (18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 14-25, 12-15) –

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Groppi, Latelli, Sottile 1, Della Lunga 8, Lasko 19, Kovar 1, Curti 6, Galabinov, Colaci (L), Kromm 20, Howard 8. DNP Peslac, Holt. Coach. Bagnoli.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 17, Gallosti (L), Birarelli 14, Garcia Pires Ribeiro, Portuondo Juantorena 22, Zygadlo, Vieira De Oliveira 2, Vissotto Neves 4, Sala 7, Sokolov 8, Corsini, Herpe 1, Bari (L). Coach. Stoytchev.

Verona pushed Trento to the tie-break but the latter did not make mistakes when it mattered most. Trailed 2-1, Juantorena showed the way back in with 4 aces and the MVP title. Verona had to do without Holt, substituted by Curti, who did well. The hosts played well, better than in game 1, but the World Champion responded with 12 blocks (6 from Birarelli), 4 aces and 54% in attack.

Michal Lasko (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We are a bit disappointed with the fourth set. We let it slip away right from the start, after two sets played at the top level. Shame because at 2-1 up, we had an opportunity to push them to game 4. We have served very well today, which we had not done in game 1. They played well and did not make many mistakes. We’ll go to Trento to give everything we have. Shame we have wasted an opportunity tonight”.
