In the playoffs quarter-final, Macerata had the better of Modena away from home at the end of an intense and tight game. Before the game, Angel Dennis received the “Gazzetta trophy” award, which is given to the best player of the regular season according to the famous daily sport paper, ‘La Gazzetta dello Sport’. In front of 3500 fans, Modena played good volleyball but Macerata proved too powerful in the first and third set. Led by an outstanding Diaz, Modena took the second but Omrcen (MVP) showed the way in the fourth to seal it for the guests. Game 2 will be on Wednesday at 8.30 in Macerata.

Silvano Prandi (Trenkwalder Modena): “We haven’t played our best volleyball and Macerata deserved to win. We struggled above all in attack: we ended with 50%, which you can’t afford to do against such a strong team like Macerata. Let’s think about game 2 now”.

Fefè De Giorgi (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “It’s always very important to win the first game, this is good for the spirit and it gives you confidence. It’s true that each game has its own story in the playoffs and we know that we have still a lot of work on. Swiderski ? He is finally back at 100% and his contribution was very important”.

CEV CUP 2009 / 2010, Final Four – Semi-final

COPRATLANTIDE PIACENZA – BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO 0-3 (20-25, 22-25, 23-25) –

COPRATLANTIDE PIACENZA: Rak 5, Meoni 1, Grassano, Boninfante, Sequeira 5, Zlatanov 11, Rinaldi (L), Oivanen, Urnaut 3, Bjelica 8, Pereira Bravo 14. DNP Boschi. Coach. Lorenzetti.

Cuneo goes through to the Cev Cup final thanks to a 3-0 win in the Italian derby over Piacenza. Giuliani’s team will be back on court on Sunday at 6pm to fight for the title against the winner of Maaseik (the hosts) and Odintsovo (Russia). Captain Wijsmans showed how proud he was to play at home, very near his home town. He stood out and finished top scorer although everybody played well.

“This is the second final for Cuneo this season – said coach Giuliani – It was a great victory but we have to keep our feet on the ground because we’ll be facing  an even tougher task tomorrow. We are behaving as a great team, we did not hit the serve as hard as other times and tried to limit the mistakes as much as we could, building our success on the block-dig combination. Piacenza had an excellent game, we found it real hard in the third but we did well to cut the deficit and snatch it to seal it on a 3-0 score”. Regarding their possible opponent in the final, he said “They are two very different but strong teams. The Russians are traditionally more physical with great ability at the net and on the serve, while the Belgium team has a better technique, with an excellent dig and a fast-paced game”.

GM CAPITAL CHALLENGE CUP 2009 / 2010, Final Four – Semifinale

SCC BERLIN – RPA-LUIGIBACCHI.IT PERUGIA 0-3 (14-25, 21-25, 24-26) –

SCC BERLIN: Van De Loo 3, Holschen 5, Fuchs 2, Galandi 4, Krystof (L), Spirovski 13, Skach 1, Smedins, Hidalgo Oliva 12. DNP Gaydarski, Schwarz, Zachrich.

RPA-LUIGIBACCHI.IT PERUGIA: HÜbner 7, Pippi (L), Cernic 12, Bovolenta 6, Sintini 3, Savani 13, Ogurcak, Botti 1, Stokr 16, Nemec 1. DNP Bucaioni, Fanulli. Coach. Di Pinto.

Perugia obtained its ticket to the Challenge Cup final thanks to its 3-0 victory of the German side of Berlin. The final will be played on Sunday at 4pm.

Giacomo Sintini (RPA-LuigiBacchi.it Perugia): “When you are given favourite, you always have a lot of pressure on. The boys were focused but tense, like me I have to say. We were worried about the quality of our opponent, they make very few mistakes and are extremely concentrated in dig. You have to earn your points against them, and we earned our place in the final”.

Andrej Urnaut (allenatore SCC Berlin): “We’ve had a go. We haven’t done much in the first set but we played better in the second. We made too many mistakes in attack. Shame we didn’t take the third set. We might not have won but at least we would have made it last longer”.
