Serie A1 TIM – Round 23
Cuneo back to victory against poor Modena. Piacenza and Macerata grab tough wins against latina and Forli. Verona’s come back win crucial in playoff race against Vibo, without Simeonov.
TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA – MARMI LANZA VERONA 0-3 (21-25, 22-25, 20-25) –
TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Gonzalez 3, Corvetta, Marquez 11, Andrae 6, Quiroga 12, Tencati 6, Barone 6, Cicola (L). DNP Cannistrà, Ferraro, Saraceni, Moltò. Coach. Uriarte.
MARMI LANZA VERONA: Peslac (L), Latelli, Sottile 2, Della Lunga 9, Lasko 20, Curti, Holt 10, Colaci (L), Kromm 14, Howard 4. DNP Groppi, Kovar, Galabinov. Coach. Bagnoli.
Despite a great effort from start to finish, Vibo Valentia had to surrender against a stronger Verona team in the clutch time. Vibo had to make do without captain Simeonov (Marquez substituted him) because of a shoulder injury.
Jon Uriarte (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “This is a defeat that hurts, especially for the way it came about. We’ll prepare the next games with the same determination as ever”.
Bruno Bagnoli (Marmi Lanza Verona): “This is a crucial victory for us and our league position. We played to perfection, I am happy with the performance of the players that have come on court”.
BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO – TRENKWALDER MODENA 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-18) –
BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Wijsmans 4, Henno (L), Parodi 8, Fortunato 6, Nikolov 21, Grbic 5, Mastrangelo 8, Patriarca 5. DNP Ariaudo, Nuti, Jeroncic, Peda, Pieri. Coach. Giuliani.
TRENKWALDER MODENA: Manià (L), Soli 1, Kooistra 5, Cuturic, Dennis 10, Pagni, Kooy 1, Biribanti 3, Esko 4, Casoli 4, Diaz Mayorca 7, Piscopo 7. DNP Ciabattini. Coach. Prandi.
Cuneo proved the Cup final defeat had no effect on their league form as it played brilliantly. A surprising starting six for Modena could do very little against Cuneo and Wijsmans back. The usual starters were back in the second and things got better. Meanwhile Cuneo lost their captain who suffered a slight physical problem at the end of the first set. Whenever Cuneo stepped up, Modena was left without any answers and the third set was one-way traffic. Grbic MVP.
Nikola Grbic (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We knew this game could be tough, after a competition like the Italian cup final, which can take the energy out of you, and we also had a midweek game. Still, we got off to a good start and did well to never let Modena in the game. Prandi started without two starters and instead of surprising us, it made it easier”.
Silvano Prandi (Trenkwalder Modena): “We made a lot of technical and tactical mistakes. Our level of play was very poor. This game should make us think on what we have to do from now till the end of the championship. I used almost all of the squad but the result were mediocre”.
COPRATLANTIDE PIACENZA – ANDREOLI LATINA 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22) –
COPRATLANTIDE PIACENZA: Meoni 4, Marshall 24, Grassano 2, Boninfante, Sequeira, Zlatanov 17, Bravo 9, Rinaldi (L), Oivanen 9, Urnaut 1, Bjelica 10. DNP Mazza, Piano. Coach. Lorenzetti.
ANDREOLI LATINA: Van Den Dries, Gitto, Giovi (L), Saitta, Snippe 12, Nikic 3, Fabroni 4, Geric 3, Vujevic 14, Spairani 2, Giombini 21. DNP Cortina. Coach. Medei.
Piacenza had the better of Latina in four sets but it was more difficult than expected. Led by MVP Marshall, Piacenza dictated the play in the first two sets. Too many mistakes in the third had Latina back in it. Thanks to Giombini and Snippe, Latina did well in the fourth too, but Piacenza woke up in the nick of time with a good run of serve from Marshall, which virtually sealed it.
Leo Marshall (CoprAtlantide Piacenza): “We struggled from the third set, the work we’re doing took its toll and we felt tired. We had heavy legs, but what I liked was that we pulled together, we never put our heads down and thanks to this team effort we managed to take three important points”.
Giampaolo Medei (Andreoli Latina) “In the first two sets, Piacenza played to the maximum of its potential and we couldn’t get into the game. Then, they faded and we finally managed to show our quality. Shame there were a couple of dubious calls in the fourth set which got us a bit nervous and might have ruined our chances to obtain a tie-break”.
LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – YOGA FORLì 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23) –
LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Raymaekers 2, Cisolla 11, Vermiglio 2, Bartoletti, Stankovic 8, Martino 16, Corsano (L), Omrcen 26, Podrascanin 6. DNP Paparoni, Smerilli, Monopoli, Swiderski. Coach. De Giorgi.
YOGA FORLì: Coscione 3, Carrol 22, Popp 9, Stancu 6, De Pandis (L), Casadei 1, Loglisci 6, Maric 14, Bacci. DNP Mengozzi, Ainsworth, Bianchi, Gotch. Coach. Molducci.
Two tight sets before the favourites Macerata regained control, although Forli could nearly have got back in it. The intentions of the guests were clear as they fought hard in dig, while the host made many mistakes in the first set. The second set seemed to be the carbon copy of the first but at 16 all, MVP Matteo Martino’s run of serves with two aces made the difference. The third set was one-way traffic for the hosts and Macerata initially dominated the fourth too. However, Forli found the resources to get back in it, that is, before wasting an opportunity and handing over the point for a 23-21 score as top scorer Omrcen punished them.
Ferdinando De Giorgi (Lube banca Marche Macerata): “It took us time to find our rhythm, then we stepped up, just enough to get the win. Credit to Forli which played well and forced us to play very long rallies, they really made it difficult for us. It’s been more difficult than some expected. We haven’t watched many videos of Forli this week so we knew we would have to work hard to get this victory”.
Piero Molducci (Yoga Forlì): “I am satisfied with the overall performance, because we managed to play face to face for most of the time with a strong team like Macerata. It’s not easy for anyone to win in Macerata, we went close to get a point, which would have been great. That silly mistake that sent them 23-21 up is a shame, at 22 all, we would still have had our chances”.
