Serie A1 TIM – Round 19

The clash between World and Italian Champion went all the way to the fifth set. Juantorena led Trentino to the win Vince l’Itas Diatec Trentino, which rehistered the only home win of the day. Treviso won in Macerata and Monza in Cuneo.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – SISLEY TREVISO 1-3 (25-21, 16-25, 26-28, 25-27) –

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Raymaekers 10, Cisolla 13, Paparoni, Vermiglio 1, Bartoletti 4, Fantin, Smerilli (L), Martino 13, Monopoli, Omrcen 14, Podrascanin 13. Coach. De Giorgi.

SISLEY TREVISO: Carletti, Fei 15, Horstink 10, Papi 1, Farina (L), Kohut 14, De Togni 3, Maruotti 13, Garcia 3. DNP Sabbi, Vanin, Cuda. Coach. Piazza.

Treviso came away from Macerata with a 3-1 victory, taking full advantage of Cuneo’s home loss to become sole second in the league table. The third set was probably key as Macerata had managed to turn things around after trailing 24-20. Omrcen’s serve made the difference and the hosts even had a set point but it’s Kohut who had the final word with an ace. MVP: Ricardo.

Ferdinando De Giorgi (Lube Banca Marce Macerata): “We had a far too long break in the second set, but then the game has been tight. We even had our opportunities to seal the sets but we couldn’t do it. At times we played with too much hurry and without much composure. And we paid our mistakes dearly”.

Roberto Piazza (Sisley Treviso): “The key was undeniably the third set, in which Macerata had managed a great comeback, but then, in the important moments, our strengths in the combination block-dig made the difference. Definitely three crucial points”.

PRISMA TARANTO – MARMI LANZA VERONA 2-3 (22-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-22, 17-19) –

PRISMA TARANTO: De Oliveira 19, Ricciardello (L), Cozzi 5, Suxho 5, Westphal 2, Elia 4, Rodrigo Pinto 17, Quartarone, Bartman 20. DNP Candellaro, Montagna, Moretti. Coach. Serniotti.

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Latelli, Sottile 1, Della Lunga 8, Lasko 25, Kovar 1, Curti 4, Holt 13, Colaci (L), Kromm 18, Howard 5. DNP Groppi, Peslac, Galabinov. Coach. Bagnoli.

Verona did not feel the pressure as much as Taranto and played better at the net and in dig. Indeed, some miraculous retrieves from Della Lunga have been key. Taranto played more with its heart than its head and struggled to receive the serves of Verona’s specialists.

Roberto Serniotti (Prisma Taranto): “I am satisfied with the game anyway. There has been some positive things and a reactivity which gives me hope for the future. Given the way things went, we can be happy to have taken a point. In other circumstances, the game would have been over sooner, Taranto had only been to the tie-break once before…against Verona”.

Bruno Bagnoli (Marmi Lanza Verona): “At the end of the fourth set, the game could have gone either way. I think the block-dig combination was key, as well as the bench, which helped us to have the better of our opponents. Besides, I’m also happy to have inserted Howard back in the team because he is a very important player for us”.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO – COPRATLANTIDE PIACENZA 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 15-5) –

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 18, Birarelli 12, Portuondo Juantorena 20, Zygadlo, Vieira De Oliveira, Vissotto Neves 19, Sala 6, Sokolov 1, Herpe, Bari (L). DNP Gallosti, Fedrizzi, Corsini. Coach. Stoytchev.

COPRATLANTIDE PIACENZA: Rak 11, Meoni, Marshall 19, Grassano, Boninfante 2, Zlatanov 16, Bravo 5, Rinaldi (L), Oivanen, Urnaut 6, Bjelica 14. DNP Massari, Mazza. Coach. Lorenzetti.

Trentino couldn’t have started better its 2010. It took revenge on Piacenza, which had won the title last May in Trento. Since this final game, Trento has remained unbeaten at home. The serve kept Piacenza in it for three set, with Marshall and Bjelica unstoppable at times, while Juantorena showed the way in the fourth and fifth, he greatly helped his team to clinch it and was logically named MVP.

Andrea Sala (Itas Diatec Trentino): “Piacenza tried to make it difficult for us with their serve and it managed to do so for quite a while but then we came out on top thanks to a better overall game”.

Pietro Rinaldi (CoprAtlantide Piacenza): “At this level, the serve always is the difference; Juantorena had two great runs between the fourth and fifth set, helping his team to comeback. We had made the better start, thanks as well to the serve, but then  we faded. I still think this is an important point”.

ESSE-TI CARILO LORETO – TRENKWALDER MODENA 1-3 (17-25, 25-19, 22-25, 19-25) –

ESSE-TI CARILO LORETO: De Angelo Freitas 11, Marra (L), Marzola 2, Diachkov 18, Dolfo, Van Dijk 3, Vigilante 11, Belcecchi, Cester 7, Shumov 6. DNP Sarnari, Tereshin, Paoli. Coach. Moretti.

TRENKWALDER MODENA: Manià (L), Ciabattini, Kooistra 11, Dennis 14, Pagni 7, Kooy 11, Esko 2, Diaz Mayorca 18, Piscopo 7. DNP Soli, Biribanti. Coach. Prandi.

Led by an outstanding Esko and an excellent Pagni (came on for Dennis out with an ankle injury), Modena managed to win in Loreto despite being without  Casoli and Biribanti. Diachkov couldn’t do it all on his own for Loreto. Van Dijk did play but it was his first game back after two months out due to a car accident.

Marco Marzola (Esse-ti Carilo Loreto): “The fourth set lost really hurt, we should have handled it better. We had a great opportunity, Modena was not playing at its best, which is why the gap between the two teams was less evident. We certainly could have had a positive result, but it wasn’t to be”.

Luis Diaz (Trenkwalder Modena): “Three important points because we were in a tricky situation, against a team that blocks and digs very well. Despite the problems of Dennis, who had to come out, we managed to take the third set. Then in the fourth, we gained confidence, played with great determination from the first points and deserved the win”.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO – ACQUA PARADISO MONZA 1-3 (20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 26-28) –

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Wijsmans 13, Henno (L), Parodi 12, Fortunato 4, Nuti 2, Nikolov 24, Grbic 1, Peda, Mastrangelo 6, Patriarca 4. DNP Jeroncic, Bolla, Pieri. Coach. Giuliani.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA: Sivula 14, Rauwerdink 9, Pesenti, Krumins, Tuominen 3, Forni 10, Buti 10, Travica 5, Gavotto 20, Exiga (L). DNP Haldane, Molteni, De Luca. Coach. Berruto.

Cuneo could not make the double over Monza, which it had beaten in the cup. This 3-1 loss means Wijmans and co lose their second place in the table to Treviso. There won’t be much time to analyse what went wrong. On Tuesday, the team will fly to Tallinn for the Cev Cup 8th of final first leg (game scheduled on Thursday) and then next Sunday it will be in Treviso.

Marco Nuti (Bre Banca Lannutti): “Monza did a good job of stopping us with their dig and work at the net. They did not let us take our rhythm”.

Mauro Berruto (Acqua Paradiso Monza): “We are playing well, like we also did in the Italian Cup last Wednesday. Compared to that game, we had a great performance from Sivula tonight”.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA – ANDREOLI LATINA 2-3 (25-14, 22-25, 22-25, 31-29, 11-15) –

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Cannistrà, Gonzalez 13, Marquez 10, Andrae 12, Ferraro (L), Saraceni 8, Moltò, Simeonov 13, Quiroga 10, Tencati 8, Barone 12, Cicola (L). DNP Corvetta. Coach. Uriarte.

ANDREOLI LATINA: Van Den Dries 2, Gitto, Giovi (L), Saitta, Snippe, Nikic 20, Fabroni 3, Geric 7, Vujevic 20, Spairani 8, Giombini 14. DNP Cortina, Sambucci. Coach. Medei.

Vibo is in crisis, it totally disappeared after a good first set, while Latina did well to stay composed and land the knockout punch at the right time. Thanks to those two deserved points, Latina is back in with hopes to stay up.

Giampaolo Medei (Andreoli Latina): “We had a really poor start to the game, playing a terrible first set, Vibo deserved to win it. Then, the team reacted and we took two excellent points, which does us a lot of good in our fight to stay up”.

Jon Uriarte (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “The usual problems on the counter were there to be seen tonight again. Despite 26 blocks, we just couldn’t win it. There is a lot of work on, we’ll do the maximum”.

Saturday 2 January

Serie A2 TIM

Round 16

BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte and  M. Roma Volley leaving the rest behind

In the 16th round of the A2, the third lowest score in a set has been registered as Castellana Grotte thumped Santa Croce in the fourth set 25-7. Last season, Macerata had dominated Martina Franca on that same score in the second round of the regular season. However, there have already been two bigger gaps in the history: a 25-6 in favour of Roma against Mantova in the first round of the current season and a 25-5, which occurred in December 2006 between Coriglio and Bergamo.
