Both Montichiari and Cuneo used their serve and spikers, maybe at the expense of the middleblockers, as their main weapon in the quarter final game 2. In this exercise, Cuneo had the better taking advantage of Montichiari’s 11 mistakes. At the end of a tight second set, Roberto Horstink was the difference between the two sides with a spike followed by two aces. Tied at 1-1, Montichiari dominated the third set with a very good job at the net, creating 7 blocks and many deflected spikes that were turned into counter attack. The fourth set was tighter with Wijmans back at his old self. However, Montichiari’s block kept working just fine and Horstink was just unstoppable. The 5.300 fans celebrated as Montichiari has never been that close from the semi finals. Indeed, they had never been 2-0 up in a quarter final series.

Mauro Gavotto (Acqua Paradiso Gabeca Montichiari): “Let’s not get carried away. We are 2-0 up in the series and playing against a team struggling. We’re working very well at the net, taking the right decisions, but we also had a more efficient serve tonight. We forced the opponent to play in a predictable way and we took advantage”.

Vladimir Nikolov (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “Montichiari was better than us once again at the net. And for a team like Montichiari this is a crucial area of the game. Still, today’s last set gives us hope. If we play with the same intensity, we could be back in the series on Wednesday in Cuneo.
