While the Italian football clubs all went out of the Champions League, the volleyball clubs were enjoying great success in European competitions. Indeed, both Macerata and Trentino qualified for the champions league Final Four. They will face each other in the semi final because the regulations forbid the meeting of two teams of the same country in the final. It will be another national battle after last year’s Treviso versus Piacenza.
In the other main sports, such thing does not happen. Two Italian teams could not face in the big final of the Champions League. Volleyball in 2008-09, is the only top level team sport to have two teams in the Final Four of the main club competition. None will achieve this in football, while only one team can still make it in Basketball (Siena will meet Panathinaikos in the quarter finals).
