SERIE A1 TIM

Third consecutive win for Vibo Valentia

The Uriarte cure keeps working wonders for Vibo Valentia, who won 3-0 once again with its new coach. In the PalaOlimpia gym, the guest of Verona had to surrender against the enthusiasm and determination of the hosts.

Forli’s 3-0 victory over Padova in the big clash at the bottom of the table means Molducci’s team is catching up Pineto and Martina Franca, both on the losing end, respectively against Piacenza and Modena.

In the PalaBanca, Piacenza left only one set to Pineto. Cleber was not enough for Montagnani’s team. The red and whites did well to make up for the many players missing playing with great character to obtain three crucial points.

Modena won it in the tie-break, just like Cuneo and Macerata, who remained unbeaten at home in the league this season. In Cuneo, Wijmans and co stopped Perugia, who had registered 9 successive wins, in a game playe dat maximum intensity.

Treviso came away with a bitter defeat but still obtained an important point for the playoffs. Treviso fought hard during the five sets but in the end Macerata prevailed.

Montichiari bounced back playing well in front of its fans andgetting the three points. They lost the first set by the minimum margin but then became more accurate, especially in attack. Esko was on song and was dishing out good balls for Gavotto and Horstink, who combined for 42 points. That’s how they had the better of the league leaders Trentino, who stays top but whose advantage has been reduced by two points by Cuneo and Macerata.

There are only two places up for grabs in the playoffs. Indeed, the top sixth are now mathematically qualified for the post season.

They play good volleyball, it’s been like a rehearsal before what’s coming ahead. We had a good spell on the serve and dig, but it also went missing at times. Young Rossi was useful to the team and he could come handy too in the next games”.

Renato Felizardo (RPA-LuigiBacchi.it Perugia): “Cuneo had a good game and we only found our rhythm after the first set. This was my first time as ex in this gym, so it was a special game for me”.

Luigi Mastrangelo (Stamplast Martina Franca): “We got back in the game twice and in the fifth set, we got off to a better start than Modena. Unfortunately, our Achilles proved to be the reception again. To win a game, it’s not enough to build a 4 or 5-point gap”.

Paolo Montagnani (Framasil Pineto): “Very disappointed about the second set when at 22-21, we failed to finish off a play…Given Forli’s result, we’ll have to get down to work and focus on our main target: staying up”.

This si not an excuse to justify today’s defeat, but all the sets were quite tight and we played against a team that fought hard from start to finish. In my opinion, we can still be satisfied with the performance we had. It’s been a tough game and Montichiari did a good job of taking some risks, especially on the serve, which caused us quite a few problems”.

Ferdinando De Giorgi (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We had a lot of ups and downs in various areas of the game, which is why we did not manage to make many blocks. Still, our character made the difference in the clutch moments, and that is always a good sign, all the more so considering the Champions League game we have on Wednesday against Kazan”.

Alessandro Fei (Sisley Treviso): “We played a lot better than our last recent outings, but we faded in the key moments of the game. Still, this loss at the tie-break must be seen with a positive eye because we got an important point out of it”.

Elvis Contreras (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “We got off to an excellent start while Verona did not play very well. We did well to take advantage of the opportunities that came our way. We keep working towards to playoffs playing one game at a time, then we’ll see what are the results”.

Alberto Giuliani (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We wanted to obtain our playoff spot today but we failed to do so. We did not make the most of our qualities: the character and the serve, blocks and dig, which are fundamentsla that shows the character. The technique was not as important, I think the pressure got us a bit nervous”.
