‘Ace’ was the word of this derby between Padova and Verona. The hosts did as told by their coach Bruno Bagnoli, hitting it as hard as they can, and it worked int he first set with 5 aces. In the second setm Gabriele Maruotti was the key man, leading his team to a 2-0 lead. Coach Giuliani decided to send setter Frank Dehne, Maric and Parodi on, and it paid off. Verona were back in it as Padova lost its composure, and the game was soon to be decided on a tie-break. Padova picked up its rhythm on the serve taking an 8-5 edge but Popp and Lasko struck to get back within one. It was all even at 11 and then at 13, But Verona got the first match point on a Maruotti mistake. In the end, a Semenzato sealed the deal…with an ace. Obviously.
Andrea Garghella (Antonveneta Padova): “We got a lot on the serve, but it punished us too. We paid the price for not finishing it off in the third set. We had to keep pushing but instead we let them back in, as they forced their serve. We wanted the three points and, despite a good performance, we found ourselves empty handed. We just need a little something more, but that little something keeps us away from the victory”.
Michal Lasko (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We struggled for two sets, but then we founf our rhythm. Dehne and Maric gave us something different. From the third set on, we had nothing to lose, that took a weight off our shoulders and we went on to win thanks to our serve and reception”.
