SERIE A1 TIM

Trentino increases advantage

Trentino remains top by beating Vibo Valentia and even increased its advantage on the followers. The Italian champs made no less than 9 aces with Dore Della Lunga standing out from the 9-meter line. Vibo had to make do without Simeonov stuck in the hotel with the flu. Trento will get to next week’s big clash against Macerata with fewer sets played.

Despite struggling in the first two sets, Perugia eventually forced a tie-break against Macerata and even grabbed a rare win. Indeed, it’s the first ever time that Perugia has the better of Macerata in its PalaEvangelisti.

Cuneo moves up to second place thanks to a ninth consecutive win. Today’s victim of Wijmans and co was Piacenza, who had been ahead in every single set. Montichiari is back on track thanks to a straight set win over bottom of the league Padova. Coach Berrutto had a great effort from his bench in the person of Tiberti and Rauwerdink.

The crucial match up at the bottom between Pineto and Forli went all the way to the tie-break with Pineto taking 2 points.

Angelo Lorenzetti (Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza): “It’s been a very entertaining game, but we made too many careless mistakes against a tough opponent like Cuneo. They’ve been a bit better than us in every set. We’ve always started in front but we never managed to seal it”.

Javier Gonzalez (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “It was an important game to win against another opponent that fights for the top places. We did a good job of controlling the situation when it mattered most today, and we managed to take advantage when Piacenza faded”.

Today, despite falling behind in the score at times, we’ve always had the control of things. Next Sunday, we’ll face a tough but crucial game against Macerata. We’re ready for it”.

Rocco Barone (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “It’s a shame we did not take our chances in the first set, when we got them struggling a bit. The Italian champs solved their problem with some excellent serving that hindered the flow of our game. We’re waiting for the next game against Pineto with confidence. It will be one of the most important of the season for us”.

Mauro Berruto (Acqua Paradiso Gabeca Montichiari): “I’m very happy tonight, not for the technical aspect of the game, which was the least of my worries tonight, but because it was crucial to get back to winning ways and smile again, to stop our negative streak. I thought Rauwerdink and Tiberti were excellent. When Tiberti is called on, he always gives his maximum. These are three very important points because we’re getting closer to the playoffs and because we’re facing three very difficult weeks. I’m satisfied because we managed to handle the end of sets with more focus and composure”.

Bruno Bagnoli (Antonveneta Padova): “These were three hard-fought sets with great comebacks from both teams. In the end, Montichiari had the better. Unfortunately we did not manage to build on our advantages. It’s a shame because we could have got some points on a tough court against a team that had a few worries today too”.

Jan Stokr (RPA-Luigibacchi.it Perugia): “This victory is dedicated to our fans and the whole team. It was a really important one and the key to this win was the extra motivation we had. We had only won once in the past against Macerata, we wanted this result too bad”.

Andrea Giovi (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “It was special for me to play here. I’m glad I gave my contribution even though in the end it didn’t go well. Perugia played better in every department of the game and in the end they deservedly took the tie-break”.
