SERIE A2 TIM – PROMOTIONS PLAY OFFS FINAL
VERONA-FORLI’ WILL BE THE 5TH 3RD MATCH EVER
Marmi Lanza Verona and Mare&Volley Forlì, on sunday the 1st of june will be back on court (21.00 live on SKY Sport 2) to decide who will play in the Serie A1 TIM 2008/09. It will be the third match of the series; in the history of the Serie A2 playoffs it will be the 5th time match 3 will be played.
In the previous four times the grounds rule was cricual. On all the occasions infact, the home team won match 3. The first team doing that was Perugia in 2001/02 against Verona themselves, the last one was Crema against Gioia del Colle in 2005/06.
Through the years the promotion playoffs, replacing the play out involving the teams at the bottom of Serie A1 TIM standings, have changed substancially in the number of teams partecipating.
The 1997/98 season marked the first time for the promotions playoffs: on that occasion the table was made of 4 teams with Falconara conquering the right to play in the Top League the following year after winning in the final against Grottazzolina.
In the following two seasons the play out “old formula” was used again, before going back to the 4 teams play offs from 2000 to 2004 with semifinals and finals.
From 2004/05 and in the following two seasons though, the play offs got extended to 6 teams with the introduction of two quarterfinals matches; the second and third in the regular season standings added to the semifinals table.
From this season the new restyling, with the extension to the 9th in the regular season standings.
