Trento – Itas Diatec Trentino and Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza are two teams one step from a dream and they go on court for the Serie A1 TIM final 2008 with the determination of who wants to make it.
Match 1 of the final is also a wonderful spot for the volleyball championship: PalaTrento is packed with supporters and passion, but also with sport friendliness when Pacher, the mere of Trento and Reggi, the mere of Paicenza, hug eachother on court.
We could not have had a more balanced start. Trento is very careful with their blocking, Piacenza serves hard and fast balls and the teams play head to head in a match influenced by a tension and adrenaline you can touch.
Vladimir Nikolov sticks out because he stops Hristo Zlatanov twice with his blocks. Piacenza is a tenacious team and they do not allow a runner. This time Emanuele Birarelli’s ace breaks the ice, one of the most beautiful surprises of the season. For Trento this is the time to build a break and they do it relying on their blocks (6 in the first set against none from the opposition, they will be 10 at the end of the match), practically impassable when well positioned, but also a more reactive and effective attack which is enough to win the set.
In the second set Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza tries to straighten things up immediately. Hristo Zlatanov leads his mates again, but their game struggles to take off and find fluency. Trento’s blocking is always there together with Bari’s out of this world’s digging.
Simeonov notices that, not finding the way to break through so that Lorenzetti tries the Granvorka’s card. When everything seems downhill for Trento, the 23-20 scored by Itas is a capital which Stoychev’s formation has rarley wasted this season, but now is when Piacenza gets back in the game.
They do it by taking advantage of Birarelli and Nikolov’s mistakes in attack, going further in the set. Nikola Grbic opens highways in Piacenza’s blocking for Kaziyski ending the second set with 0 points at blocking and gives up to the final ball hit along the line bu Winiarski.
Trento goes for it in the third set. They leave no space for Piacenza. The tactical discipline is impressive. Kaziyski, Nikolov and Winiarski are lethal weapons in the hands of Nikola Grbic who once again directs the match with a clear mind.
Itas is the only one on court right now, so that Stoychev decided to give everyone a taste of this unique vibe.
The series is not over though. Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza has demonstrated they do not let match 1 influence them too much, having the strength to turn things around. Will they do it again?
Vigor Bovolenta (Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza): “It was a tense match, they played a great match making very little mistakes. We must think about match 2 straight away to cancel this ugly evening, I think Piacenza did well anyway, but we struggled to find the rhythm to play at their level”.
Nikola Grbic (Itas Diatec Trentino): “It was a very balanced match, but we managed to do what we wanted to do, I hope the team will be able to repeat a match like this. Both in the quarterfinals and in the finals we have met two aggressive teams but in Piacenza I expevt three times as much because they are a team who never lost a set in the play offs when playing at home”.
Michal Winiarski (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We ahve made a small first step, we have been good at playing a good volleyball. They key of this match was the tactical preparation. We are strong at home and we always play better than away, that is why match 2 will be different, we have to go home thinking we have won nothing and stay concentrated”.
