Trentino earned the right to face Modena in the league final thanks to a tie-break victory over Perugia in the third deciding game. Once again the court advantage was key for Stoytchev’s men, who have won 15 in as many games on home soil. The hosts immediately bounced back from the under par performance seen last Tuesday in Perugia. They played at a high level in every fundamental, but found an opponent who never gave up and managed to come back from 2-0 down to 2-2 and then from 14-11 to 14 all in the tie-break. Led by Kaziyski (MVP with 25 points) and Djuric, as well as their supporters, Trento showed more composure and will therefore play their seventh league final in eight years, the third final of the season after the Italian Cup and the CEV Cup. Perugia goes out heads high, once again with an outstanding Atanasijevic (29 points) and a superb Barone at the net and on the serve.
Radostin Stoytchev (coach Energy T.I. Diatec Trentino): “It’s been a great game thanks to both teams and their respective fans who pushed the players. We have been luckier than them. We’ll play Modena in the final, it will be extremely tough, they had more time to prepare this game. We respect Modena but we don’t fear them. At the end of the day, people will only remember the winner”.
Nikola Grbic (coach Sir Safety Perugia): “We needed that little bit of luck, we also lacked the killer touch in the second set but I am proud of my boys. They gave everything they had even in the most difficult moments. I would have loved to win because I’ve been hearing the whole season the team had no identity and lacked character. But if you look at the playoffs and tonight’s game, I’d say they clearly proved that was not the case”.
