DIATEC TRENTINO – BRE LANNUTTI CUNEO 1-3 (17-25, 25-27, 25-22, 17-25)

DIATEC TRENTINO: Sintini 1, Birarelli, Solé 13, Ferreira 7, Suxho 4, Lanza 15, Szabo 21, Colaci (L), Nelli 1, Fedrizzi 4, Burgsthaler 6. DNP Thei, De Paola. Coach. Serniotti.

BRE LANNUTTI CUNEO: Rauwerdink 9, Antonov 12, Marchisio (L), Gonzalez 3, De Pandis (L), Casadei 15, Kohut 12, Alletti 2, De Togni 10, Coscione, Rouzier 2, Maruotti 8. Coach. Piazza.

Cuneo won the classic against Trento 3-1, which they had not won in nearly seven years (April 2007). The Italian champions are struggling with injuries (Sokolov and Birarelli) and have conceded their third consecutive defeat. Setter Gonzalez was named MVP, while Casadei registered 15 points at 58%.

Matteo Burgsthaler (Diatec Trentino): “One bad news is followed by another, we really didn’t need Szabò’s injury. He was playing well and he tried to lead us out of the tough patch we were having. We did not manage to play our volleyball because Cuneo made it hard for us. We were disorganized in every area of the game. This is a bad spell for us, hopefully it will end very soon”.

Javier Gonzalez (Bre Lannutti Cuneo): “This is a great victory, the fourth in a row. We took advantage of Trento’s problems but also built this win on our attack, which made it hard for them. They struggled on the serve and at the net, while we have been more effective and deserved the three points. Our come-back to the top continues”.

ALTOTEVERE CITTÀ DI CASTELLO – CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-12) – ALTOTEVERE CITTÀ DI CASTELLO: Franceschini, Fromm 6, Carminati, Corvetta 1, Dolfo 4, Massari 10, Tosi (L), Piano 14, Van Walle 28, Rossi 8. DNP Lensi, Sartoretti, Marchiani. Coach. Radici.

CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Henno (L), Parodi, Zaytsev 26, Stankovic 6, Kovar 12, Martino 8, Monopoli, Giombini, Kurek 2, Baranowicz 2, Podrascanin 18. DNP Patriarca. Coach. Giuliani.

Superb breakthrough from Città di Castello which fought back from two sets down to beat the league leaders Macerata at the tie-break. The gym was packed an hour before the start in this first sold-out game of the season and the fans were not disappointed. The fifth set was tied at 7 before Dolfo gave the hosts an 11-10 lead. Rossi blocked Zaytsev to make it 13-11 and Massari gave Città di Castello its first match point, which was converted thanks to a Piano block on Kovar.

Andrea Radici (Coach Altotevere Città di Castello): “The game has been as hard as we expected. In the first two sets, their amazing strength in attack got us dizzy, then in the third they let us operate more and we could come back. We won the game thanks to an extraordinary physical fitness which is really paying dividends”.

Alberto Giuliani (Coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We have lacked consistency and lacked efficiency on the serve. Indeed, we did not get much from that area. After two sets won against a good Città di Castello team, we could have sealed it in the fourth but they stepped up a gear, became galvanized and took it to the fifth. We have a personality problem away from home, I think we’re all aware of this by now and we’re working on it. The boys are working hard and these are precisely the type of games that must make us get better from now until the end. In some areas we did well, but the serve in modern volleyball is crucial to make it hard for the opponent. At the same time it’s important not to make many mistakes. We have to focus on this. Kurek? He suffered back pains, we’ll see how serious it is in the next few days”.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA – SIR SAFETY PERUGIA 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18) – COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Le Roux 15, Partenio, Papi 10, Fei 7, Kaliberda 19, Simon 12, Tencati, Vettori 11, De Cecco 2. DNP Smerilli, Zlatanov, Husaj. Coach. Monti.

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA: Buti 11, Paolucci 2, Petric 14, Giovi (L), Cupkovic, Della Lunga 1, Mitic, Vujevic 11, Atanasijevic 18, Semenzato 6. DNP Della Corte, Barone, Fanuli. Coach. Kovac.

Severely beaten in the Champions League, it did not take long for Piacenza to get back to its best and regain confidence. They defeated Perugia and extended its advantage on third place Trento to 6 points and cut the deficit on the leaders. Piacenza played like a champion, pulling together in the tough moments and finding inspiration from its captain Papi, MVP. 13 blocks for Piacenza and only 3 for Perugia.

Luca Monti (Coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “I liked the team performance. With Le Roux in, we surprised Perugia, which had probably studied more Vettori and were not as ready to face the French. After the game against Kazan we had this tough game, especially from a psychological standpoint. I am happy with the reaction of the team, which managed to contain a team like Perugia which, in my opinion, is the most in-form in the league right now”.

Giovi Andrea (Sir Safety Perugia): “We probably lacked a bit of consistency. Piacenza plays at a high level, they managed to make it very hard for our reception. Credit to them for obtaining this win but we certainly could have done better”.

EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA – ANDREOLI LATINA 2-3 (25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 12-15) – EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA: Piscopo 17, Mazzone 8, Izzo 1, Del Vecchio, Cesarini (L), Sabbi 22, Zanuto 16, Fornés Jul, Casoli 9, Saitta 3. DNP Diamantini, Porcelli. Coach. Cichello.

ANDREOLI LATINA: De Rocco, Rossini (L), Gitto 10, Sottile, Skrimov 15, Verhees 10, Noda Blanco 11, Fortunato, Starovic 37, Fragkos 2. DNP Michalovic, Tailli, Paris. Coach. Simoni.

Casoli and co were ahead on the scoreboard 2-0 after an hour or so against a lackluster Latina team that, however, remained in the game thanks to Starovic’s points. And it’s precisely number 15 that ignited the come-back that led to the victory in the tie-break. He scored 37 points and was named MVP.

Giulio Sabbi (Exprivia Molfetta): “We have a lot of work on, we have been training decently but the results have not come our way and defeats do not give us the boost we need. Hopefully we’ll quickly get out of this crisis. Shame because we were two sets up and had a chance to seal it”.

Carmelo Gitto (Andreoli Latina): “We started off without energy while they put us under pressure, especially Sabbi with his serves. We did a good job in the third not to get discouraged and get back into the game. This win will do us good, this is a relief to get off the bottom of the league. This gives us a boost ahead of our European game, where we could face more than one difficulty”.

Thrilling encounter in the PalaOlimpia that ended in the tie-break in Ravenna’s favor. Outside hitter Giacomo Bellei was terrific, he scored 20, 6 of which in the tie-break and was named MVP of the game, but that was not enough. The game had not started well at all for Ravenna as middle blocker Manuele Cricca was sent to hospital for a forehead injury picked up at the end of the warm-up.

Giacomo Bellei (Calzedonia Verona): “We were not solid enough and lacked will to win. This is not the first time we throw away some points when we are ahead, we struggled on their float serve. It’s a shame to lose this way at home”.

Niels Klapwijk (CMC Ravenna): “There were ups and downs, at times we did well and others they were the ones dictating. In those games, you need a little touch of luck. We had a similar type of games in a way, making the same mistakes. In the end, we are happy to finish on the winning end”.
