2011 CEV Champions League
Trentino wins the Champions League for the third consecutive times.
TRENTINO BETCLIC – ZENIT KAZAN 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20)
TRENTINO BETCLIC: Kaziyski 19, Zygadlo, Vieira De Oliveira, Stokr 15, Sokolov 2, Sala 2, Juantorena Portuondo 15, Garcia Pires Ribeiro 4, Della Lunga, Birarelli 6, Bari (L). DNP Colaci. All. Stoytchev.

Trento had been standing on top of Europe for two years and will do so for the third consecutive year following its triumph over Kazan. Radostin Stoytchev’s team realised a historical hat trick of victories in the Champions League in front of its home fans (7.500 supporters in the final). Trento writes its name in the history books alongside the legendary Ravenna and Modena, only teams to have won the competition three times in a row before.
Radostin Stoytchev (Trentino BetClic): “I don’t want to think of anything except for celebration right now, for the league there is time. Now is the time to enjoy this splendid victory. This is definitely the most beautiful of the three, because we did it with our fans. There were many in Prague and Lodz, but tonight we were all together. We had perfectly studied the game tactically, it was hard but we came out on top as we stayed composed in the tough moments. Beating a team like Kazan makes it an even bigger achievement, this is the best team of the east, they’re amongst the absolute best in the world”.

Round 12: Latina stays up. Macerata secure third place. Monza and Verona mathematically in the playoffs.
MARMI LANZA VERONA – CASA MODENA 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 16-14)
MARMI LANZA VERONA: Latelli, Pajenk 15, Kosmina, Brunner 10, Meoni 1, Lasko 21, Smerilli (L), Lotman 14, Cala Gerardo 20, Herpe. DNP Zingel, Mazzi. Coach. Bagnoli. CASA
MODENA: Manià (L), Fabroni 4, Kooistra 7, Dennis 24, Berezhko 13, Kooy 17, Casadei 3, Creus Larry 1, Casoli, Piscopo 11. DNP Nicolini, Ciabattini. Coach. Bagnoli.
Nearly four thousand supporters enjoyed a long battle between Verona and Modena. Pajenk shined and was named MVP but it’s thanks to a great team performance that Verona managed to hold off Modena in the tie-break after losing a two-set lead.
Alen Pajenk (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We are satisfied with tonight’s performance, and especially to have qualified for the playoffs in front of our amazing fans. We’ll go to the playoffs and try to surprise even Cuneo, like we have already done with Trento. It’s always nice to play against a good team and an excellent crowd”.
Daniele Bagnoli (Coach Casa Modena): “There has been a good reaction which is why I am satisfied with the performance. The tuning between setter and outside hitter cannot be found that quickly, and this week we haven’t trained with continuity, but I’ve seen some positive things tonight. We are happy to have maintained fourth place”.
LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – SISLEY TREVISO 2-3 (22-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 12-15)
LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello, Savani 15, Paparoni (L), Vermiglio 2, Marchiani, Conte, Stankovic 6, Martino 16, Vadeleux, Van Walle 20, Cacchiarelli (L), Podrascanin 8. Coach. Berruto.
SISLEY TREVISO: Elgarten, Fei 23, Horstink 20, Kovar, Papi 13, Farina (L), Boninfante 1, De Togni, Bontje 6, Maruotti, Bjelica 9. DNP Szabo, Vanin. Coach. Piazza.
Treviso is back on track thanks to a tie-break victory over Macerata. This puts an end to a four-game losing streak. This defeat will not hurt that much Macerata, which has secured third place thanks to the point collected.
Mauro Berruto (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “I intend on looking on the positive side of things, we have played better compared to recent outings against Cuneo and Roma, and the tie-break made sure we’ll finish in third place. We have made progress, the team was present and even played some excellent volleyball in the fourth quarter. The fact we obtained this third place means we’ll have a full week at our disposal to improve some more, and I personally feel like celebrating this achievement because it could be worth a qualification in the next Champions League, and we clinched it after having played 37 games, Challenge Cup included, in very few months”.
Roberto Piazza (Sisley Treviso): “We’ll take the good things from this result, but I personally expected more from my team in terms of quality, we have been a little too inconsistent. Still, winning in Macerata always represents an excellent result, hopefully this victory will help us make a good run for the playoffs”.
ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA – TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 3-1 (25-11, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23)
ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Rauwerdink, Forni 8, Molteni 10, Buti 9, Rooney 16, Travica 4, Gavotto 14, Shumov 2, Exiga (L). DNP Cetrullo, Pesenti, Krumins, Zito. Coach. Monti.
TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Rivera Caamano 9, Coscione 1, Anderson 21, Kindgard, Baroti, Simeonov 16, Ananiev, Barone 5, Fanuli (L), Nikolov 7. DNP Feroleto, Suljagic, Ferraro. Coach. Di Pinto.
Excellent win. Thanks to these three points over Vibo Valentia, not only Monza secured a playoff spot and consolidated its sixth place but it’s still has fourth place in sight too.
Sean Rooney (Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “I think it’s an excellent victory, although we haven’t been that consistent and neither did we play always with the needed fighting spirit. It will be important to prepare the next games as well as we can, and play to the best of our ability. We will take care both of the technical and mental aspect”.
Manuel Coscione (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “Unfortunately, despite a good second set in which we got back in the game, the result is negative. They hit the serve hard, especially in the first set. Bit by bit, we got back in it, and we played fairly well. In the fourth set, though, we surrendered, they believed in it more than us, they made a couple of good digs, and we failed to counter attack on a couple of plays”.
BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE – RPA-LUIGIBACCHI.IT SAN GIUSTINO 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21)
BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE: Milushev 15, Rak 13, Pagano (L), Cozzi 9, Guerra 1, Patriarca 1, Falaschi 3, Torre, Dvoranen 16, Rodriguez 11, Gallotta, Cicola (L). DNP Guglielmi. Coach. Gulinelli.
RPA-LUIGIBACCHI.IT SAN GIUSTINO: Zhukouski, Van Den Dries 13, Schwarz 17, Dias 7, Giovi (L), Finazzi 8, Nikic 2, Braga, Lo Bianco (L), Maric 8, Cester 12, Steuerwald 3. DNP Bartoletti. Coach. Zanini.
In his last game, Francesco Guglielmi said goodbye to his fans in Castellana Grotte after 12 seasons and 300 games played for the club. And he did it helping the team keep a little hope to stay up with a victory over San Giustino obtained with fierce fighting spirit.
Flavio Gulinelli (BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte): “I’d like to thank the boys that gave me a great satisfaction, and let me thank Ciccio Guglielmi who decided to stop his career at the top level. I have to thank him for his humanity and professionalism, for what he gave us and what he gave to the club. I promise our fans that we’ll go to Treviso to take the three points. Unfortunately, our effort might not be enough but I think that our championship has to finish on a high just like it’s been going for the past months”.
Emanuele Zanini (RPA-LuigiBacchi.it San Giustino): “A defeat that hurts a little because we did not manage to convert the opportunities we had in the first and second set. It’s been a good game, thrilling, and at times technically played at a good level. We managed to get back in it in the third set but then the momentum went back to the hosts and we did not manage to take the points we needed”.
COPRA MORPHO PIACENZA – BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO 3-2 (25-18, 25-15, 22-25, 18-25, 15-11)
COPRA MORPHO PIACENZA: Popp 14, Semenzato, Marra (L), Gonzalez 4, Ruiz 20, Perazzolo 1, Nilsson 1, Massari (L), Zlatanov 12, Holt 11, Tencati 7, De Almeida. DNP Boschi. Coach. Lorenzetti.
BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Mastrangelo 4, Henno, Parodi 24, Galic 2, Fortunato 6, Montagna (L), Carletti 3, Grbic, Nikolov 21, Volkov 13. DNP Peda, Patriarca. Coach. Giuliani.
Piacenza is back on the winning track after four consecutive losses, taking two crucial points against Cuneo in its fight to stay up. Mvp: Benito Ruiz.
Vladimir Nikolov (Cuneo): “An extremely difficult game, we have physical problems. Patriarca suffers from his back, Wijsmans is out with an ankle injury. According to the regulations, we were forced to play with the second libero. Giuliani tried to sort things out but in the second set, we made too many mistakes in reception. Piacenza played well, and in the end, it deserved the win”.
Marcus Popp (Copra Morpho Piacenza): “In the first two sets, we played to perfection, probably because we approached the game without as much pressure as in previous games. In the third and fourth set, our attack did not work as well as at the beginning. Cuneo sent an unusual line up, they seemed relaxed, without fighting spirit. They woke up when there have been the first rallies that led to a more fluid game with more competitive spirit”.
ANDREOLI LATINA – M. ROMA VOLLEY 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23)
ANDREOLI LATINA: Kovacevic 13, Popelka 19, Kohut 6, Gitto 7, Sottile 1, Cortina, Pieri (L), Spairani 1, Starovic 21, Giombini. DNP Nonne, Labardi. Coach. Medei.
M. ROMA VOLLEY: Zaytsev 6, Paolucci, Lebl 6, Uriarte, Cesarini (L), Corsini 3, Saraceni 5, Bencz 26, Yosifov 6, Cisolla, Cupkovic 10. DNP Tomatis, Corsano. Coach. Giani.
Latina did not wait for positive results from other games. The players did the job themselves by downing Roma in the derby and making sure they will be in the division next season.
Andrea Giani (M. Roma Volley): “We really have to reflect on this game. We had to win it, we haven’t prepared it well inside. You can’t afford to make several mistakes in a row and let the opponent get back in it”.
Jiri Popelka (Andreoli Latina): “I am really happy today because we wanted to make up for Vujevic’s absence. I did well in attack because Sottile was perfect in his assists. I am glad I have contributed to win this game which means we’ll stay up”.
